Under the Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) (Compulsory Third Party Insurance) Regulation, all owners of pleasure craft operated in Hong Kong waters are legally required to hold valid third-party liability insurance. This covers your legal liability for injury to third parties and damage to third-party property. Operating without this cover is a criminal offence in Hong Kong.
Third-party-only (TPO) is the legal minimum — it covers your liability to others but does not cover damage to your own vessel. An all-risks policy adds comprehensive hull and machinery coverage for your own vessel — including accidental damage, fire, theft, salvage and usually personal accident. For any vessel with significant value, comprehensive all-risks cover is strongly recommended.
Standard Hong Kong pleasure craft policies typically cover Hong Kong territorial waters and may include parts of the South China Sea. Coverage for Macau, mainland China or wider Asian waters usually requires an extended territorial limits endorsement. We assess your intended cruising area and ensure your policy specifically covers all the waters you navigate.
Yes - but this requires a specific chartering endorsement. Standard pleasure craft policies exclude commercial chartering use. We arrange chartering cover for owners who hire out their vessel commercially, whether bareboat or crewed, ensuring the correct cover is in place for both the owner and the charterer.
Typhoon season in Hong Kong (May to November) significantly increases the risk of hull damage from severe weather. Our all-risks policies address typhoon risks explicitly — including hull damage, mooring failure, fire and salvage costs following a storm. We also advise clients on the precautions that should be taken ahead of a named typhoon to ensure claims are not affected by failure to take reasonable precautions.
