Bloodstock insurance is specialist insurance cover for thoroughbred and high-value horses. It typically covers mortality (death from any cause), theft, transit, loss of use and auction purchases. Unlike standard pet insurance, bloodstock policies are specifically designed for horses that represent significant financial investments - particularly racehorses and breeding stock.
While the HKJC does not make bloodstock insurance compulsory, racehorses in Hong Kong can be worth millions of Hong Kong dollars. Without cover, the full financial loss falls on the owner in the event of death, injury or compulsory retirement. We strongly recommend at minimum an All Risks Mortality policy for all horses running under the HKJC system.
Limited Loss of Use cover specifically protects Hong Kong horse owners against the HKJC's rules on compulsory retirement. If your horse is retired from racing due to recurring bleeding episodes or heart irregularities - conditions the HKJC takes seriously - this cover compensates you for the value of a horse that can no longer compete, even if it is otherwise healthy.
Yes. 'Fall of Hammer' insurance takes effect the moment the auctioneer's hammer falls — protecting your purchase immediately upon acquisition, before the horse has left the sale ring or completed any post-sale veterinary inspection. We arrange this cover for all major overseas thoroughbred auctions and the HKJC ISG sale.
We arrange individual cover for syndicate members, protecting each member's proportionate share of the horse's agreed value. Policies can be structured to cover all syndicate members under a single arrangement, or individually for each member. Contact Dr Michael Hurley to discuss your specific syndicate structure.
Yes. We arrange international bloodstock cover for horses training, competing or being sold at auction outside Hong Kong — including in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Japan, France and the USA. Cover can be arranged on a per-journey basis or as an annual international policy.
